History of the "Buy Bitcoin" notepad
Auction house Scarce.City announced a record sale of a notebook with the iconic inscription “Buy Bitcoin” for 16 BTC, which is equivalent to more than $1 million. The inscription became famous after its author, Christian Langalis, demonstrated it during a speech by the former head of the Federal Reserve Janet Yellen in 2017.
The new owner and his plans
A user known as Squirrekkywrath in the Web3 crypto community became the buyer of this symbolic item. Experts described him as a “veteran of the Bitcoin industry.” Proceeds from the sale will be used to develop a wallet on the Lightning network on the Urbit platform, founded by Langalis himself.
Path to cult status
The "Buy Bitcoin" sign became a meme after an incident at a House Financial Services Committee hearing where Langalis displayed it behind Yellen. This led to the inscription's iconic status, and Langalis was kicked out of the premises for breaking the rules.
Record sale at auction
Scarce.City noted that the sale of the notebook was a record for them. The auction took place at the Pub Key Bitcoin themed bar in New York, highlighting the growing popularity of cryptocurrency artifacts.
The sale of the "Buy Bitcoin" notebook demonstrates the influence of cryptocurrency symbols on culture and history, as well as the growing popularity and value of crypto collectibles at auction.
