Ukrainian Yaroslav Vasinsky, 24, was sentenced to 13 years and seven months in prison for his role in the hacker group REvil. In addition, the court ordered him to pay compensation in the amount of $16 million. This verdict was a response to Vasinsky’s participation in more than 2,500 ransomware attacks.

Famous Hacker

Wasinski, also known as Rabotnik, is a figure from the hacker world involved in large-scale cyber attacks aimed at extorting large sums of money. According to the US Department of Justice, the total ransom demanded by REvil exceeded $700 million.

Confession of Guilt

The convict previously pleaded guilty to 11 counts, including fraud, conspiracy to defraud and laundering illegally obtained funds.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized active cooperation with international partners and the use of all available tools to identify and bring to justice cybercriminals.

Detention and Deportation

Wasinski was arrested in Poland in October 2021 and deported to the United States at the request of American authorities. This case demonstrates an example of successful international coordination in the fight against cybercrime.

Most of the REvil participants were detained by security services in January 2022. The group was suspected of carrying out an attack on the American company Colonial Pipeline.
