Rebooting the Bitcoin Test Network: Necessity and Challenges

Programmer and crypto enthusiast Jameson Lopp came up with a proposal to reboot the Bitcoin test network. His idea is that this environment needs to be regularly updated to keep it free and to ensure that the test currency does not become valuable.
The crux of the problem that Lopp pointed out is that the Bitcoin test network has not been rebooted for 13 years. This led to a number of negative consequences, including problems with block processing and the creation of artificial value within the test environment.
The testnet, as Lopp emphasizes, should remain free for developers to use so that they can test their solutions without restrictions or additional costs. However, in recent years, due to some projects, the test currency began to acquire value, which contradicts the basic principles of its functioning.
The programmer gives the example of “storms” - features of the test network consensus that cause excessive block production. This leads to the fact that the test network is ahead of even the main Bitcoin network in block production.
In this regard, Lopp proposes introducing a culture of regular test network reboots. This, in his opinion, will help avoid problems and conflicts in the future, and will also support the free use of the testing environment for all interested developers.
In addition, Lopp emphasizes the need to update the testnet in light of the activities of some projects that may abuse its resources for their own interests. As a result, such actions may disrupt the network and create obstacles for developers.
