According to the Gaslimit.pics platform, 52.3% of network participants voted in favor, which is more than the required minimum of 50%. This decision opens the way for scaling the blockchain, allowing for increased performance without the need for major changes or hard forks.

The validator system allows nodes to be configured to signal support for raising the gas limit, which makes it possible to improve the network’s efficiency without interfering with its structure. This decision is important because Ethereum has been struggling with scalability issues in recent years. Since around August 2021, the average gas limit has been stable at 30 million, when it was increased from the previous 15 million. However, according to a user with the nickname dataalways.eth, the current gas limit has already exceeded the 32 million mark.

Evan Van Ness, former COO of Consensys, noted that this is the first increase in the gas limit since the network switched to the Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm in September 2022 as part of the Merge upgrade. He added that the process of coordinating changes to PoS has proven more difficult since it is much more decentralized than the legacy Proof-of-Work technology.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced that Pectra will be upgraded in March, which will increase the number of blobs from three to six, which will improve the performance of the second layer (L2). Buterin also emphasized that decisions on changes will be made by staker voting, similar to how the gas limit change was decided. This will allow the network to evolve in line with technological improvements without the need for hard forks.

However, some developers have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of increasing the gas limit. In particular, Ethereum developer Tony Warstetter warns that a sharp increase in the limit to 60 million could lead to disruptions in transaction propagation and validator slot skipping, which could threaten the stability and security of the network.
