An unknown whale lost $24 million worth of digital assets in a phishing attack. This was reported by the team of blockchain security firm PeckShield.
Presumably, this attack contained the largest number of phishing messages from one person. In total, $24.2 million of assets were withdrawn from the cryptocurrency wallet, including 4851 Rocket Pool ETH (RETH) and 9579 Staked ETH (STETH). The scammer later exchanged these assets for 13,785 ETH and 1.64 million DAI. Then about 451,000 DAI were transferred to Fixed Float.
Reddit users noticed that the scammer was probably able to steal the money, because the owner of the wallet mistakenly agreed to withdraw funds.
Half a million dollar PEPE theft
In early July, a trader lost $453,000 in PEPE after following a phishing link. As a result, the attackers stole more than 356 billion tokens in just two transactions. Another user reported losing 2.7 billion PEPE in the same attack and is now looking for ways to recover the funds.
Analysts later found out that the scammers' addresses were linked to Inferno Drainer, a scam service that takes 20% of stolen tokens. In total, the attackers stole assets worth over $7 million from 5,000 victims.
The crypto industry has lost over a billion dollars since the beginning of the year
In total, the Web3 industry lost more than $1.25 billion in 2023 as a result of 211 incidents. Most of the attacks occurred on the Ethereum blockchain: five incidents were recorded on all network protocols. Four incidents occurred on the BNB network, as did Base with exploits in LeetSwap, SwirlLend, Magnate Finance and RocketSwap. Together, these three networks accounted for 62% of all network losses in August.
At the same time, decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms turned out to be the main target of attackers, centralized sites managed to avoid exploits during this period.
