US Attorney Damian Williams sentenced one of the co-founders of the OneCoin project, Carl Sebastian Greenwood, to 20 years in prison.
According to Williams, Greenwood, along with Ruja Ignatova, sought to capitalize on the success of the first cryptocurrency. They used Bitcoin's popularity to convince investors that OneCoin was the next investment opportunity not to be missed.
“In reality, OneCoin had no real value and was intended by Greenwood and Ignatova to be a scam from day one,” prosecutors said.
They also reported that the multi-level Ponzi scheme brought scammers more than $4 billion from 3.5 million victims.
Greenwood's accomplice has not been seen since 2017, when she flew to Greece. Prosecutors said she was named to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Ten Most Wanted list in June 2022. Although in February 2023, journalists reported the murder of Ignatova.
In March, the prosecutor's office demanded the maximum possible punishment for the head of the legal department of OneCoin, Irina Dilkinska.
