VKontakte users will confirm education through NFT diplomas

The social network VKontakte has launched a new feature for users - now they will be able to obtain the status of a university graduate in the form of a unique non-fungible token (NFT). This is stated in the press release of the platform.
"ITMO University graduates will be the first to receive their own NFT diploma — students who graduated from the university in 2023 will be able to verify their education in the VKontakte profile. Confirmation of the formation of VKontakte will work on the technology of Soulbound tokens (SBT)," the social network said in a statement.
To apply for graduate status, the user needs to enter a personal code in the VK NFT app. The system will automatically check the data, and the user will receive his own unique token - it cannot be transferred or sold to another person, it will be a confirmation of the authenticity of the diploma.
NFT diplomas are available to all 2023 graduates of ITMO's Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programs. Moreover, you can add metadata to the NFT: year of graduation, name of the specialty, topic of the diploma, skills acquired in the learning process.
How SBT works
Verification of diplomas will work on SBT technology. The peculiarity of such NFTs is that they are issued in a single instance and are forever tied to a specific blockchain address. These tokens cannot be transferred or sent to another address, and only the owner has access to it.
In the social network, you can also confirm the completion of courses, personal and professional achievements, awards. Verification of achievements using NFT will appear for both personal profiles and public communities.
NFT diplomas from MIPT
Last year, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology issued diplomas to graduates of the Master's program "Blockchain" in NFT format. The blockchain program became "the first Russian state curriculum to issue non-fungible NFT tokens for master's degrees."
The university claims that the diploma in NFT format is presented in the form of a "graphic video object", which integrates information about the master's student, as well as the year of graduation. It will be a supplement to the traditional paper diploma of higher education.
