The Brazilian city of Rolante was in the spotlight after the country's largest public television broadcast a story on March 30 about the adoption of Bitcoin in this small town in southern Brazil.
Beginning of History
The story began with an appeal from a cryptocurrency supporter, Ricardo Steam, to the Rolante trade association, where he proposed accepting payments in the world's main cryptocurrency - Bitcoin.
Leadership in Bitcoin Adoption
Ricardo Steam's words turned out to be prophetic. In just one month, Rolante became the largest Brazilian city accepting Bitcoin, and in two months, the largest in the world. This is a unique achievement: one point of sale for every 105 inhabitants, while in another large city this figure is one point of sale for every 5,000 inhabitants.
Features of the City
Rolante, with a population of just over 21,000 people, is located in the border area with Argentina and Paraguay. The GDP per capita is 34,884 Brazilian reals, which is approximately $6,976.
Incentives for Bitcoin Adoption
The acceleration of Bitcoin adoption was facilitated by the holding of a two-day Bitcoin festival, at which the volume of payments reached 300,000 reais, or $60,000.
Growing Interest and Integration
At the moment, 40% of the city's merchants already accept bitcoins as payment. The healthcare sector is also preparing to integrate crypto payments. It is noticeable that interest in Bitcoin is growing: if previously at the checkout in stores they only asked about cash or credit cards, now the question of accepting Bitcoin is becoming more and more relevant.
Impact on Tourism and Society
The adoption of Bitcoin attracted many tourists to the town who had already mastered crypto-payments. At the same time, the residents of Rolante are just beginning to get acquainted with the first cryptocurrency.
Rolante is becoming an example of how small communities can innovate their economies, attract attention, and set new standards in the world of digital payments.
