London teenagers have been sentenced to 23 years in prison for stealing mobile phones and cryptocurrency in a series of robberies across the city.
A total of four teenagers robbed 26 people. They threatened victims with knives and took away phones and access codes to crypto wallets. In total, they stole more than £115,000 (about $150,000) in cryptocurrency.
"There were 19 robberies in which 26 people were robbed. In my career as a police officer, I have never met such cowardly criminals, "said detective James Green.
The police tracked down the attackers through the delivery of food, paid for with stolen bank details. The robberies took place from June 2021 to January 2022, however, the police were only able to arrest the teenagers at the beginning of July. They were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.
Schoolchildren steal NFTs for Roblox skins
Earlier, analysts found that since December 2021, at least 900 Discord servers have been compromised to carry out phishing attacks. In total, they affected at least 32,000 wallets, from which they stole non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrency worth $73 million.
At the same time, about 95% of server attackers turned out to be users under the age of 18. With the stolen money, they buy laptops, phones, as well as skins for the Roblox platform. To cover their tracks, they paid people to use their personal data to register on exchanges.
A survey by Engine Insights showed that cryptocurrency was the second most popular investment among American teenagers. If they had money to invest, their first choice would be stocks (39%), cryptocurrencies (29%), and real estate (29%).
