The European Commission introduced the concept of Web4, embarking on the development of "virtual worlds that reflect the values and principles of the EU."
According to the bloc's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton, the European Union will invest in the introduction and expansion of new technologies. In addition, EU residents will receive the tools and skills to "safely and confidently use virtual worlds."
How Web4 Works
The EC defines Web4 as the convergence of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, virtual worlds, and augmented reality.
"In addition to the third generation of the Internet currently under development, Web3, the next generation called Web4, will provide integration between digital and real-world objects and environments, as well as improved interaction between humans and machines," said the head of the unit.
The EU plan aims to develop local Web4 businesses and set global regulatory standards. The program to support this initiative is called "Partnership in Virtual Worlds within the framework of Horizon Europe". It was developed to create an "industrial and technological roadmap for virtual worlds."
In addition, the European authorities will present an immersive urban environment called CitiVerse, which will be used for urban planning and management, and the European Virtual Human Twin for modeling treatment methods.
"Web 4 and virtual worlds will bring health benefits, contribute to the transition to a green environment and better anticipate natural disasters," said Margrethe Vestager of Europe Fit for the Digital Age.
Health risks due to the metaverse
It is noteworthy that only a couple of weeks ago, the Research Service of the European Parliament (EPRS) stated that metaverses pose a threat to both the mental and physical state of virtual reality users.
According to EPRS, when used excessively, virtual reality can cause mental health problems and reduce physical activity. In addition, there is a high risk that the metaverse will increase people's dependence on social networks and online games.
