US presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy opposed the development of a digital national currency (CBDC), calling it "the grave of American freedom."
“I am opposed to central bank digital currencies, which I consider a serious threat to freedom in this country,” he said in a video interview.
Speaking about the success of other countries in developing CBDCs, Ramaswamy noted that China is implementing the digital yuan to restrict people's freedom. Therefore, the US should not follow the example of Beijing:
“It is precisely for the reasons why the CCP [Communist Party of China] wants to adopt the CBDC that we in the United States should not do this,” Ramaswamy stressed.
American politicians against CBDC
In recent months, the digital dollar has been criticized by many American politicians. In particular, US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pointed out a number of problems with the introduction of digital currency - with the help of CBDC, the government will be able to monitor all the finances and transactions of any of the Americans. In addition, the Central Bank will have the right to set limits on transactions and restrict where and to whom they will send money.
Another US presidential candidate, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, promised to ban the digital dollar if he wins:
“The CBDC is a huge threat to American freedom and will go to the ashes of history on January 20, 2025,” he said.
Politicians ask to block the development of a digital dollar
Moreover, several US lawmakers have made attempts to block the development of the CBDC. In March, representatives of the Republican Party in the US Senate introduced a bill that would prohibit the Federal Reserve System and the administration of President Joe Biden from developing a digital national currency. In their opinion, the digital dollar will become a threat, since the US authorities should not have even more control over the money of Americans.
In July, lawmakers reintroduced a bill against the CBDC, sponsored by Republican Alex Mooney. He believes that the Chinese scenario can also wait for the United States: CBDC will lead to total surveillance of the Americans.
