The number of attacks in the field of decentralized finance (DeFi) increased in the second quarter compared to the same period last year, but the total amount of stolen funds was less.
The number of attacks increased by 65.3% year-on-year, from 49 to 81 incidents. The figure was 11% more compared to the previous quarter of 2023. However, losses decreased by 60.4% compared to the same period in 2022. Total losses for the quarter amounted to about $265.5 million, and since the beginning of the year - more than $702 million.
How attackers steal money
Most often, the DeFi sphere lost money due to hacks — 83.1%. Fraud and fraud accounted for 16.9% of losses. However, of the total funds lost, losses from hacks decreased by 66.4%, and fraud and fraud cases increased by 225.4% compared to the second quarter of 2022.
About 49.7% of the losses relate to the hacking of the Atomic Wallet and the fraud around the Fintoch financial platform in May. As a result, the amount of damage amounted to $100 million and $31.6 million, respectively.
Where do hackers operate?
Despite the multimillion-dollar losses, 2023 is still far from 2022 in terms of theft. Last year, when the total amount of lost funds amounted to $ 3 billion.
The BNB and Ethereum networks were hacked the most. There were 36 incidents in BNB, accounting for 44.4% of losses, while there were 26 incidents on the Ethereum network, accounting for 32.1%. The Arbitrum network, which did not experience a single hack in the second quarter of 2022, experienced a significant increase in targeted attacks, with 10 incidents occurring in the second quarter of 2023.
